The story is cute, but has no major depth, and the characters are written just the same, so it's nothing like a traditional Final Fantasy. You can play it solo, sure, but you'll feel it. That said, it feels a bit archaic and restrictive to play, and single player is noticeably not the way it's "meant" to be played. The positives are the charming visuals and soundtrack, monster and character design, and general fun to be had through combat.
